Duterte Suggests Filipino Citizens To Refuse Vaccines To Be Injected While Sleeping

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President Filipina Rodrigo Duterte propose residents who are still reluctant vaccinated Covid-19 to be injected while they sleep.

According to Duterte, residents who refuse to be vaccinated against Covid-19 are the main problem in handling the corona virus pandemic in the Philippines at this time.

Currently, only 22.4 percent of the total 111.4 million Filipinos have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

“The problem is they don’t want to be vaccinated. Look for them in your villages, and let’s go to them while they sleep and inject them so we can complete the vaccination,” Duterte said in a local television interview on Tuesday (12/10).

“If they don’t want to be (vaccinated), let’s go to them and inject them when they sleep at night,” he added.

The proposal was implemented by Duterte even though the Philippine government has so far not obligated its citizens to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

The Philippine Ministry of Health emphasized that the Covid-19 vaccination is not mandatory because it must be carried out with the consent of the vaccine recipient.

In addition to blaming anti-vaccines, Duterte also highlighted the shortage of doses of the Covid-19 vaccine that occurred earlier this year.

Quoted CNN FilipinaDuterte said he felt overwhelmed at not being able to find a company willing to sell vaccines to the Philippines.

The Philippines officially started its Covid-19 vaccination program on March 1. The Philippines is the last country to start national vaccination in Southeast Asia.

Currently, the Philippines is the country with the highest number of infections and deaths from the corona virus in Asia, recording a total of 2.68 million Covid-19 cases and 39,896 deaths.
