Dutch Railways makes train travel cheaper for young people up to eighteen NOW

The Dutch Railways make traveling by train a lot cheaper for young people between the ages of twelve and eighteen. Starting in the summer, the railway company will introduce two special train tickets, making travel 50 to 60 percent cheaper.

For example, there will be a day ticket of 7.50 euros that allows young people unlimited travel outside rush hours. This card can be purchased via the NS app, even if the train passengers do not have a public transport card.

With a weekend card of 15 euros, young people can travel unlimited free throughout the weekend to every station in the country. Unlike the day ticket, this option is only available in subscription form.

The NS hopes that these discounts will get more young people into the train. “We want to make the train a logical choice for a new generation of travelers,” says Tjalling Smit, member of the NS board of directors.

By making traveling by train cheaper, parents no longer have to take their children away by car, Smit says. “Young people will soon be able to travel affordably and independently, the parents no longer have to take their car and it is also sustainable.”

The new alternatives will be available from next summer. An evaluation will follow after six months. “If this unexpectedly disappoints, NS will investigate other measures to get more young people to choose the train,” said the NS.
