Dutch government parties want TikTok ban on civil servants’ phones – Computer – News

If it is up to the government parties, the officials of the Dutch government may not have TikTok installed on their work phones. The parties believe that the risk of data ending up in China via the app is too great.

During a parliamentary debate that took place on Wednesday afternoon, it appears that D66, VVD, CDA and the ChristenUnie are in favor of such a ban. D66 MP Hind Dekker-Abdulaziz said the following: “TikTok poses a potential security risk and we must avoid that danger. It is unclear what the Chinese company does with users’ personal data. It is also unclear what exactly the company monitors and I therefore think that civil servants should not have TikTok on mobile work devices. This way we prevent the possible uncontrolled leakage of information.” recorded RTL News. Dekker-Abdulaziz stated earlier to ask to State Secretary Van Huffelen about the possibility of banning the TikTok app from civil service phones.

The VVD also thinks it is unwise to leave this app on the phones of civil servants and warns against naivety. The CDA makes a similar appeal to ‘not be naive about what the Chinese government can do with our data’. He points to legislation from the United States to ban TikTok from government telephones. The fourth government party, the ChristenUnie, supports the proposal for a ban, but also wants to go further: “We are in favor of a total ban of TikTok, because we do not want user data to end up in the hands of the Chinese government.” There is therefore a majority for a ban on civil service telephones, but not yet for a total ban.
