Due to the obligation to wear a mask, dermatologists see more people with skin complaints around the mouth. People who already have sensitive skin are at risk for more complaints. Certain skin complaints usually occur in the winter, but due to the obligation to wear a face mask, they also play in the summer.
Dermatologist Menno Gaastra says in a conversation with One today that he and his team receive ten to fifteen new patients every week with problems associated with wearing a face mask. People with sensitive skin in particular develop skin complaints around the mouth due to wearing a mouth cap a lot. An example of this is getting pimples after wearing a mouth cap.
“Before the pandemic, these types of complaints mainly occurred in the winter, but we also saw them a lot in the summer last year. But it is certain that a group of patients would probably not come here if the mask were not there.”

In particular, the medical masks aggravate people who already suffer from skin problems. The bad fit or the fact that a mouth cap is too tight damages the skin: “These are the well-known mouth caps that you buy in the supermarket. They are made of hard material and often do not have the best fit. That will chafe the skin and eczema can occur.”
