DUET • Margot Alexandre at the Theater of the Garonne in Toulouse

For a long time we wanted to write a story of friendship. A friendship that would have the same romantic strength as a love story. Margot Alexandre and Nans Laborde-Jourdàa DUET

DUET is a contemporary tale at the height of a monkey, which winds its way between a wildlife park on the outskirts of Cincinnati, the backstage of the Opéra Garnier and the solar system.

After POLYESTER, presented in the Garonne in 2021, the duo continues with DUET, a space for dialogue to invent stories. Like so many studies on the duo, the bond and the relationship of dependence between beings.

November 22, 1991. Night has fallen, thick, over the distant suburbs of Cincinnati and plunges Robert’s cabin into darkness. The space, which is functional, has not really been set up and traces of the former tenants can still be found around a shelf. Robert, 34, grew up in California where he studied at the National Primate Research Center before joining Allen and Beatrice Gardner in their center just a few miles away.

He has become their assistant and devotes much of his time to Zara, a young monkey that the pair of primatologists want to learn sign language. Robert is his contact person, he teaches the words of the chimpanzees in ameSLan (American sign language). Over the years, they become a small family, indispensable for each other …
