That writes De Gelderlander. The moment the bystanders heard the drowning man, he drifted under a railway bridge near Nijmegen. A skipper who was nearby also heard the cry for help and went after the person in the water. Near the Honig complex, the skipper was able to pull the drowning person out of the water.
The skipper of the Neptun 2 of the bunkering company of the same name in Nijmegen sailed with the drowning person on board to the Oude Haven and handed the victim over to the emergency services.
It is not yet clear how the person ended up in the water. A spokesperson for Neptun Heijmen told De Gelderlander that it is the first time that a drowning person has been rescued from the Waal in this way by one of their skippers.
