Dresden – Exhibition “Johannes Vermeer”, Striezelmarkt and more

At the center of the exhibition is the Dresden painting “Girl reading a letter at the open window”, which is now being presented to the public for the first time after four years of restoration. Nine other paintings by Vermeer’s closely related to this painting are traveling from all over Europe and the USA With only about 35 works known today, Vermeer’s oeuvre is very small.
The Dresden Striezelmarkt – whose name is derived from the Dresdner Stollen – is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. It has been held on the Altmarkt in Dresden since 1434. Here visitors can expect delicious Saxon specialties and traditional craftsmanship. A wonderful place to buy Christmas presents and enjoy the pre-Christmas atmosphere with a mug of the famous “Wackerbarths Weiß & Heiß”. A visit to the city’s landmark is also full of atmosphere. In the Frauenkirche there is a central church tour after an organ devotion. There is a lot to learn about the history of the impressive building.
During a visit to a Stollen bakery you will learn exciting facts about the production and the history of the famous namesake of the “Striezelmarkt”. The delicious pastries can of course also be tasted with a cup of coffee.
