Drastic Drop in Bathing Temperatures Hits Norway’s Gold Coast

Norway’s Gold Coast does not tempt holiday-hungry Norwegians with summer temperatures this week – neither in the air nor in the sea.

In recent weeks, the temperature in the sea in Agder has shown over 20 degrees. On Tuesday morning, however, the temperature in the water on Flødevigen in Arendal fell from over 20 degrees to ten degrees. This reports Agderposten.

Across Southern Norway, from Egersund to Risør, bathing temperatures have dropped drastically from Monday to Tuesday, says the Institute of Marine Research.

– Like a shock

Jan Erik Stiansen, head of research at the Institute of Marine Research, explains that such sudden changes in temperature in the sea are due to offshore wind – the wind carries the surface water away from land.

– Ten degrees feels like a shock. If you bathe in 17 degrees, and the next day it is ten, then there is a big difference, he tells Dagbladet.

Such shifts are not unusual in Southern Norway, says the research manager. But it is still not common for the bath temperature to drop ten degrees. It is much.

– Just a few kilometers out in the Skagerak, the water is 17 degrees and enjoying itself.

We only get to enjoy that bathing water when the wind turns again.

The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research’s overview of bathing temperatures, Havvarsel.no, shows the bathing temperature in Grimstad on Wednesday is 11 degrees, in Kristiansand the water is 12 degrees. Arendal has 12 degrees, but on Thursday it will creep up to 16 degrees there.

– Is quite chaotic

In order for the warm water to reach the southern coast again, an easterly wind is needed.

– The heat in the sea is more conservative. Once it has arrived, it stays for a while, and it takes more time to heat up, says Stiansen.

In the Oslo Fjord there is still good bathing water in the sea – there the wind has not taken hold of the surface water. In Western Norway, the sea is also still warm.

When the surface water is pulled away from land, it is pulled 90 degrees to the direction of the wind, explains Stiansen at the Institute of Marine Research. This means that if the wind blows from the west, the water goes to the south. In Southern Norway, they therefore have to wait for easterly winds for better bathing temperatures.

At the weekend, the warm degrees will return, reports the Meteorological Institute. At least in the air.

25 grader

– At the weekend it can be over 25 degrees during the day in Agder. The temperature in the sea will gradually rise during the weekend, but then there will be more unstable air from next week. I am therefore unsure whether it will return to the temperatures that have been in the sea, says on-duty meteorologist Siri Wiberg.

It may therefore be tempting to take a bath at the weekend in Southern Norway, but the bath temperatures take a little longer to return.

Meteorologist Wiberg emphasizes that several days of heat are needed for the temperature in the sea to begin to rise.

On Tuesday, an area of precipitation lay over Rogaland and Agder, and gave “rain in buckets”. It may also have affected the bathing temperature, says the meteorologist.

There have been early good bathing temperatures this year. This year’s June has been the fourth warmest June we have had since measurements began in 1900.
