DR Congo: Jihadist attack on village – At least 10 dead – 2024-04-05 00:57:28

At least ten villagers were killed in an attack by gunmen on Tuesday night into Wednesday in a community in the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the border with Uganda.

Local authorities attributed the attack in the village of Mangodomou to Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) insurgents who have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State jihadist group.

Colonel Charles Omeonga, head of the relevant military command, attempted to reassure the residents of the wider area, assuring them of the determination of government forces to neutralize the ADF insurgents.

The ADF was made up mainly of Ugandan Muslim rebels and since the mid-1990s has been ravaging the eastern provinces of DR Congo, killing thousands of civilians. In 2019, they pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, which has since claimed responsibility for several ADF attacks.

In 2021, Kampala and Kinshasa launched joint military operations to oust ADF rebels from their strongholds in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, to date they have not been able to put an end to their attacks.
