Direct speech Smith: “We have new information that the DPRK has recently supplied additional weapons to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine. According to our information, the DPRK has transferred more than a thousand containers of military equipment and ammunition to the Russian Federation.

We strongly condemn the DPRK for transferring to the Russians such weapons, which will undoubtedly be used to attack the Ukrainian people, Ukrainian cities, as well as in the further illegal war of the Russian Federation.”

Details: She also reported the presence of satellite images that show the movement of these containers from North Korea to Russia on cargo ships.

According to her, the United States believes that Pyongyang wants to receive other military technologies from Russia in exchange for ammunition. It is possible that Pyongyang’s “wish list” includes fighter jets, surface-to-air missiles, armored vehicles, equipment for the production of ballistic missiles and other weapons.

Smith stressed that the United States will continue to monitor the situation and identify any attempts to supply weapons to Russia.

Background:

  • In November it was reported that the DPRK, according to South Korea, provided Russia with more than a million artillery shells for use in the war against Ukraine, and also sent advisers to Russia on the use of ammunition, which will last about two months.
  • Pyongyang has some of the world’s largest stockpiles of artillery shells and missiles compatible with the Soviet-era weapons Russia uses in Ukraine. Cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow has intensified as both countries face global isolation and Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin held a summit in Russia in September.
  • In October, the White House said the Kim regime provided 1000 containers Russian military equipment and ammunition.
