DPR Summons Telkom and Telkomsel Bosses About Investment in GoTo, what will be discussed?

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The BUMN Investment Working Committee (Panja) Commission VI DPR RI summoned the Directors of PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (TLKM) and its subsidiaries Telkomsel on today, Tuesday (14/6/2022). The summons was related to Telkomsel’s investment in PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO).

In the meeting which was attended by the President Director of Telkom Indonesia Ririek Hardiansyah and the President Director of Telkomsel Hendri Mulyana Syam, Commission VI of the DPR RI asked the two of them to explain the reasons for this. Telkomsel’s investment in GoTo.

Chairman of the Working Committee for BUMN Investment in Digital Companies as well as Deputy Chair of Commission VI of the DPR Sarmuji said, throughout the nearly three-hour meeting, the committee members asked for an explanation regarding 4 things related to Telkomsel’s investment in GoTo.

“In general, the committee has investigated from Telkom and Telkomsel about investing in companies GotoCommission VI wants to ensure 4 things,” he told Kompas.com, Tuesday (14/6/2022).

First, Commission VI wants to ensure that the investments made by BUMN are in accordance with the business rules for state-owned companies and their subsidiaries. In addition, to ensure that investment has taken into account the business scheme and company prospects, both in the medium and long term.

Second, I want to make sure that Telkomsel’s investment in GoTo is in accordance with the principles of good corporate governance good corporate governance (GCG).

Third, to ensure that there is a potential conflict of interest in the investment. And fourth, we want to ensure the benefits that Telkomsel can get from its investment in GoTo.

For information, the entry of Telkomsel’s investment into GoTo was under the spotlight of alleged conflicts of interest, because GoTo’s President Commissioner is Garibaldi Thohir, who is the brother of SOE Minister Erick Thohir.

Sarmuji said that the committee meeting was only open when the Directors of Telkom Indonesia and Telkomsel gave presentations, in which they denied that investing in GoTo caused the company to lose, but that there were gains.

“Meanwhile, the investigation is closed to ensure that matters sensitive to the market and companies can be explored by the committee without disturbing Telkom, considering that Telkom is a public company that is listed on the stock exchange,” he explained.

He also confirmed that he would again hold a follow-up meeting regarding Telkomsel’s investment in GoTo with the agenda of hearing explanations from the Directors of Telkom Indonesia and Telkomsel, and inviting experts for their views.

“We will invite Telkom and Telkomsel again, and we will also invite experts to be additional considerations,” concluded Sarmuji.
