DP World intends to operate ships with zero-emission fuel

DP World

The DP World Group announced in a statement that it aims to operate at least 5 percent of its short-distance shipping ships on zero-emission fuel by 2030, as part of its commitment to decarbonization and adopting emerging technologies to accelerate the green and comprehensive transition to a net-zero emissions future.

The company’s announcement coincides with the UAE’s hosting of the COP28 climate conference, which continues until December 12, as the world seeks to mitigate the impact of carbon emissions, transition, and provide funds to invest in adapting to climate change and moving from the stage of promises to the stage of implementation.

Dubai Ports is a subsidiary of Dubai World, and has a portfolio of assets that includes a number of ports and business parks.

According to a statement from DP World on Saturday, it will implement this goal by operating two ships powered by hybrid electricity (their engines run on traditional fuel or electricity) and five ships powered by methanol.

DP World has joined the First Movers Coalition (FMC) to address decarbonisation challenges.

The FMC Alliance is a global alliance of companies that leverage their purchasing power to decarbonize the world’s highest-emitting sectors. It currently includes 90 members.

These sectors are 7 sectors, including aluminum, aviation, chemicals, cement, shipping, steel, and land transportation, and together they contribute to 30 percent of global emissions, according to the statement.

It is worth noting that the DP World Group was able to reduce carbon emissions resulting from its operations in the UAE by approximately 50 percent this year, by benefiting from energy through renewable sources from a local provider. This transformation has led the DP World Group to make significant progress on the goal set in the UAE, which is to reduce carbon emissions by 42 percent by 2030.
