Dozens of entangled bodies, dead and wounded. What happened on the morning of Friday, June 24, at the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla? According to witnesses, nearly 2,000 men from sub-Saharan Africa left their camp in Morocco to head, armed with stones and sticks, towards the chain-link fence separating Morocco from Spain. The border post of Barrio Chino (Spain) is known to be the easiest to cross.
The men would have tried to climb the fence, and cut it. Spanish police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. On the Moroccan side, images filmed by NGOs show soldiers knocking unconscious men to the ground. Some are injured in their fall, or asphyxiated in the crush. No help intervened to try to save them. The toll is at least 37 dead according to some associations, which are calling for an investigation. Dozens of Moroccan police were also injured.
