At the World Championships in Cortina, there was no herb against the Swiss speed specialists: 2 days after Lara Gut-Behrami’s Super G triumph, another driver from the strong Swiss team took the victory in the descent.

In the supreme discipline of female speed drivers, Corinne Suter raced to her first world title. The 26-year-old showed great performance, especially in the middle and final section, and was followed by gold in the downhill 48 hours after the silver medal in the Super-G. For Suter, who had already won the downhill start in Val d’Isère this winter, it was the 4th precious metal at world championships.

Behind Suter, Kira Weidle from Germany sensationally won silver. Born in Stuttgart, she finished in the top 3 for the first time this season with a faultless drive in the lower part of the track and secured the second speed medal for the DSV team after Romed Baumann’s Super G silver. Another Swiss woman, Lara Gut-Behrami, completed the podium: The newly crowned Super-G world champion did not remain entirely flawless at the Olympia delle Tofane – but in the end the strong Ticino woman achieved bronze.

Meanwhile, the Italian speed team – as well as the Austrians showing in training – went empty-handed. In the absence of four-time season winner Sofia Goggia, Elena Curtoni finished 8th as the best Italian. South Tyrol’s only World Cup starter Nadia Delago was third-best Azzurra on her debut in Cortina, behind Curtoni and Laura Pirovano (12th): the 23-year-old Ladin woman failed all passages 100 percent – in the end she was 15th place.
