Done: Rangnick takes over United

Now it’s over. Ralf Rangnick replaces Ole Gunnar Solskjær as coach of Manchester United, the Premier League club confirms on its website.

“I am excited to take over at Manchester United and focus on making this a successful season for the club,” the 63-year-old said in a statement.

But the German will not be too long in the post. He has signed a contract that extends the season, then the idea is that he will step into a consulting role for another two years.

“The squad is full of talent and has a good balance between youth and experience. The next six months, all my energy will go to help the players reach their full potential both individually and, more importantly, as a team,” he says.

Rangnick most recently came from the assignment as sports director of the Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow. He has previously been the head coach of Emil Forsberg in Leipzig.

Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjær was fired after the 1-4 loss away to Watford just over a week ago. Michael Carrick has since led the team in the winning match in the Champions League against Villarreal (2-0), and in the league match against Chelsea (1-1) on Sunday.
