Documentary film on the Art in Public Space program

Hamburg is celebrating 41 years of art in public space this year. Since the beginning of the 1980s Hamburg has become one of the most important places for art in the public space with numerous projects and works of art. Director Helena Wittmann, who has just celebrated a great success at the Locarno Film Festival, among other things, shot a 30-minute film about art in public space in Hamburg in the summer of 2022. The history of art in public space is told through interviews with protagonists and exemplary works of art.

The spaces in Helena Wittmann’s films are much more than just places of action. She questions and contextualizes the boundaries of these spaces and creates a unique atmosphere of light, sound and people. In the film commissioned by the Ministry of Culture and Media, a thoughtful and optimistic documentary about public space and exemplary works of art in Hamburg was created. After the premiere, the film will be available on the website of the Ministry of Culture and Media at www.hamburg.de/bkm/kunst. This page will also be redesigned in the coming weeks on the occasion of the anniversary of “41 years of art in public space”.

Dr Nora Sternfeld, Professor of Art Education at HFBK, will give the keynote speech. She publishes on contemporary art, educational theory, exhibitions, historical politics and anti-racism and was a documenta professor in Kassel from 2018 to 2020.

Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media: “How can you use the public space beyond the commercial structures in such a way as to invite you to meet and exchange ideas? As a space in which to meet freely and spontaneously and take on new perspectives on social challenges? Over the past 41 years, the Art in Public Space program has addressed this issue in very different ways. The development of the program also tells a lot about how audiences, how art and culture and how the interaction with each other has changed over the decades. The question for us today is: how can we further develop the program of art in public space in a contemporary way and what opportunities for public discourse does this result in? The film provides important food for thought here.
