Doctors warn: be alert to use of fillers with Moderna vaccine

A group of six doctors, including plastic surgeons, dermatologists and cosmetic doctors, calls on colleagues to be alert on side effects of with Moderna vaccine in combination with the use of fillers.

Two weeks

“Pay close attention to whether patients who want to use fillers have recently been vaccinated or will soon be vaccinated,” says cosmetic doctor and researcher at Erasmus MC Tom Decates.

If you have fillers placed two weeks before or two weeks after the vaccine, you may experience side effects. Doctors are therefore called upon to check whether people with inflammatory complaints from fillers have recently been vaccinated.

Three cases in the US

Reason for the warning to doctors are three cases in America. Tom Decates, cosmetic doctor and researcher at Erasmus MC: “In America, complaints were observed in three of the more than 15 thousand vaccinated people after the administration of the moderna vaccine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in America received reports from doctors, those patients saw thickening and redness developing in their lips and on the cheekbones where fillers had previously been injected. This reaction occurred after their vaccination with the Moderna vaccine. “

The reaction that may occur is because the immune system has become more active due to the vaccination. The immune system then reacts against the foreign material; the filler. And because of this, an inflammatory response can occur that causes redness and thickening.

Side effects due to fillers

Side effects occur more often from the use of fillers, even without a vaccine. Watch the video below from 2018 about the side effects of fillers:

Antihistamine

This is now the reason for doctors in the Netherlands to warn their colleagues. Decates: “We therefore now advise not to perform a filler treatment in a period of 2 weeks before to 2 weeks after taking the Moderna vaccine.”

Should such a reaction occur, then a patient can be treated well according to Decates. “Patients can be treated by administering corticosteroids and antihistamines, the same drugs people get for hay fever or other allergic reactions. All three patients in America are completely cured.”

Other vaccines

So far these side effects have only been reported with the Moderna vaccine and not yet with other vaccines. Decates: “As far as is known, there are no inflammatory reactions in combination with other vaccines. Little is known about it.”

The doctors would like to emphasize that the risks of becoming and being infected with the coronavirus are much greater than the response to the vaccine in people who have been treated with fillers.

Report

Doctors who see a patient at the consultation hour with unexplained thickening or redness in an area that has been treated with a filler after a Moderna vaccination are asked to contact the Erasmus MC dermatology clinic.

Vaccine manufacturer Moderna says they are aware of the cases in America. They are calling on doctors to report any suspected side effects.

The Netherlands will receive a total of 6.2 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, with which about 3 million Dutch people will be vaccinated. RTL Nieuws presenter Antoin Peeters explains in the video below what the benefits of this vaccine are.
