Doctors Beware of Inflammatory Diseases If Your Child Is Infected With Covid-19

Suara.com – Indian doctors warn of possible disease inflammation when infected Covid-19 in children. This rare condition usually appears four to six weeks after infection.

New York City pediatrician, United States, Dr. Dyan Hes said parents need not be too worried because these cases are still very rare.

But parents should continue to monitor their children for symptoms of the inflammatory and potentially fatal condition several weeks after infection with the coronavirus, Dyan said.

Children who face the asymptomatic course of Covid-19 are still at risk of developing multi-system inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) about four to six weeks after infection. Reports have emerged in India of children being hospitalized, shortness of breath with a drop in blood pressure, and testing positive for Covid-19 antibodies.

“I’m worried about this condition. We don’t know how deep the problem is. What’s worrying is we still don’t have data on the burden of this disease in India,” Dr. SP Kalantri, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital quoted from Fox News.

The first wave of Covid-19 in India resulted in at least 2,000 cases of MIS-C, data from the Indian Academy of Paediatrics Intensive Care Chapter shows.

Dr Aarti Kinikar, a pediatrician working in Pune, Maharashtra, western India, told the BBC of 30 such cases since April, 13 of whom are still in hospital. Most had suffered from inflammation of the heart or myocarditis.

“The number is too much after the second wave,” Kinikar said.

By comparison, as of May 3, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had reported 35 deaths and 3,742 cases of MIS-C, half of which were among children ages 5 to 13.

The agency advises parents to contact a health care provider immediately if their child shows symptoms such as fever and abdominal pain, red eyes, chest tightness or pain, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, low blood pressure, neck pain, rash and vomiting.
