Do you need a helmet to ride a bike? Get one free; Find Events in NYC Here – NBC New York (47)

The New York Department of Transportation is holding several events this month in Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn where it is offering free helmets to reinforce its traffic safety campaign.

If you need one, you can go to the following dates and locations in your county:

THE BRONZE

  • June 18 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 225 Nevins Street.

QUEENS

  • June 25 from 11 am to 2:30 pm at 214-41 34th Avenue, Bayside.
  • July 9 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 175-18 Merrick Boulevard, Queens.

The distribution of bicycle helmets and accessories will be carried out while supplies last. Helmets are available for all ages.

For children under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a waiver form.

New York State law requires all children ages 14 and under to wear bicycle helmets certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The law also requires all commercial bicyclists to wear helmets that are well-fitting and in good condition. Employers are required to ensure that their commercial bicyclists wear helmets.

In general, the law requires:

  • That children under the age of 13 wear bicycle helmets certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
  • Children under the age of 12 can ride their bikes on the sidewalk. All other bicyclists may receive a citation for riding on a City sidewalk.
  • Children under 1 year old cannot be carried on a bicycle.
  • Children must travel in a properly attached baby carrier.
