Dr. Gad Al-Qadi, head of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, confirmed in a statement to the institute that the great coupling between Jupiter and Saturn began days ago and reaches its climax on December 21 after sunset in the evening and beginning of the night and in conjunction with the winter solstice – in the northern hemisphere – as it will exceed its approach by a distance Less than 0.1 degrees arc the brightest stars in the sky that night.
Dr. Osama Rahmeh, head of the Sun Research Laboratory at the Institute, confirmed that this scene began on December 17 in drawing attention, where Saturn is to the left of Jupiter, and until their complete conjunction on December 21, where they exchange their places in the sky, so that Jupiter is to the left of Saturn, and then continue. Their gradual separation from each other, which will be noticeable, starting on December 25th, until the end of the year, until their separation appears clearly visible.
He said that the institute, represented in the astronomy and sun and space research departments, will organize an astronomical evening at the institute’s headquarters in Helwan, during which an introductory lecture on this event will be answered and any questions about this connection will be answered, and then the association will be monitored and watched by special telescopes that are operated by specialists from the institute, and the media committee will receive media professionals and amateurs to answer them. A live broadcast will also be presented on the institute’s page to monitor the phenomenon, and in order to allow the largest number of citizens to follow the phenomenon.
The observers, who are amateurs and interested, can see the coupling with the naked eye, and there is no danger of that, except that watching it through the telescope will be able to see the four large moons of Jupiter (Europe – Io – Callisto – Ganymede).
It is worth noting that this conjunction is repeated every 20 years, as the last conjunction was in May 2000, but the coupling was not so close to the Earth for only 800 years, and this is what described this astronomical event as rare.
