Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic regained leadership in the ranking of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), updated the version of which is published on the official website of the organization.

He lost his first place on April 20 after Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz’s victory over Daniil Medvedev in the Masters final in American Indian Wells. Thanks to this success, the Spaniard removed Djokovic from first place. However, Alcaraz failed to defend points for winning the 2022 Miami Masters and lost the lead.

Djokovic was unable to perform at the Masters in Indian Wells and Miami due to the refusal of the US authorities in a special permit to enter the country due to the lack of vaccination against COVID-19.

What record has Djokovic updated

Prior to losing the lead, Djokovic had topped the rankings since January 30, after winning the 2023 Australian Open. In Melbourne, he won the 22nd title in the Grand Slam tournaments, repeating the record of Spaniard Rafael Nadal among men. The absolute record belongs to the Australian Margaret Court (24).

On February 24, the Serbian broke the absolute record for the number of leading weeks in the rankings of tennis players, which since November 1996 has been held by the German Steffi Graf (277). In total, he leads the rankings for 381 weeks.

Andrey Rublev, who lost to Sinner in the fourth round of the tournament in Miami, moved up from fifth to sixth place. Karen Khachanov, who lost to Medvedev in the semi-finals, moved up from 16th to 11th place.
