The Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, Franziska Giffey: “Berlin stands for diversity. This is what makes Berlin special and we are proud of it. Today we honor people whose commitment and personal commitment make our city and our economy strong. Berlin’s economy benefits from entrepreneurs and founders with migration experience. They are at home in all sectors, from trades to fintech start-ups. They develop innovative products and services, create jobs and are one of the reasons why Berlin is developing economically well above the national average. Congratulations to this year’s winners and thanks to all the companies that took part in the competition. They are examples of what constitutes migrant entrepreneurship in Berlin: Above-average commitment, performance and creative power, perseverance – and of course the courage to start a business and be self-employed. This is the right spirit for our goal of making Berlin the number 1 business and innovation location in Europe.”

Stefan Spieker, Vice President of the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce and one of the laudators of the evening underlined: “The honorees today are impressive proof of the valuable contribution that entrepreneurs with a migration background make not only for the Berlin economy. This is shown, for example, by the example of Boreal Light GmbH. The company employs 25 people from 14 nations in Berlin, has a team of around 300 in Africa – and they all make life better for millions of people: With their solar-powered seawater desalination plants, more than six million people in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East now have access to clean drinking water. This is sustainable, innovation-driven entrepreneurship made in Berlin at its best. On behalf of the entire Berlin economy, I congratulate all winners of “Diversity takes action.”
