Diversity is not universally appreciated: Marvel’s ‘Eternals’ banned in multiple Gulf countries | Movie

FILM‘Eternals’ will not be shown in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar. The reason would be the introduction of Marvel’s first gay superhero. Disney also refused to make a censored version of the film.

In ‘Eternals’ we meet the superhero Phastos (Brian Tyree). He is openly gay and shares a kiss with his husband in the film. Something that is still illegal in several Gulf States. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar have therefore quietly removed the film from their sites. The print would be released in the United Arab Emirates for the time being.

Disney also refused to produce a censored version of ‘Eternals’. Something that was previously also the case with the Pixar film ‘Onward’. In it, Disney introduced a lesbian character. Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia then cut the film from their cinemas.

“Eternals” follows the ancient alien team of Celestials, who have lived secretly on Earth for 7,000 years but must reunite to protect the world from the evil Deviants. Angelina Jolie (“Lara Croft”), Richard Madden (“Bodyguard”), Kit Harrington (“Game of Thrones”) and Gemma Chan (“Crazy Rich Asians”) will star.

‘Eternals’ is now in cinemas.
