District of Bad Dürkheim: Information on Brexit – legal residence situation from 01.01.2021

Bad Dürkheim – The exit agreement concluded between the EU and the United Kingdom ends on December 31, 2020. This means that the transition phase in which British nationals are treated in the same way as nationals of an EU member state also ends.

For the period after the end of the transition period from January 1, 2021, the Withdrawal Agreement provides for extensive grandfathering for British nationals and their family members who have previously been entitled to free movement so that they can continue to live and work in Germany.

This legal residence status is acquired by law, and the person concerned is issued with a “GB residence document” ex officio. An application is not necessary for this.

British citizens and their family members who are not yet registered in the area of responsibility of the Bad Dürkheim district must report their stay to the Office for Migration and Integration within six months, i.e. by June 30, 2021, in order to be able to derive a right of residence under the Withdrawal Agreement . The notification can be made in writing, electronically or by telephone.
The provisions of the Residence Act apply to all British nationals who have entered the country on or after 01/01/2021.
