Distribution of coronavirus in the Netherlands is increasing: ‘This is a wake-up call’

The increase can only be partly explained by the fact that the total number of tests has increased by just under 18 percent. The proportion of people who turned out to have the coronavirus after a test rose much faster.

Two weeks ago, 0.6 percent of all people who had themselves tested carried the coronavirus; last week it was 1 percent. That is an increase of two thirds.

Wash hands

To prevent further spread of the virus, it is important that people adhere to the measures, RIVM emphasizes. “Keep your distance, wash your hands, sneeze and cough in the elbow and use paper tissues,” the organization writes. But also staying at home and having it tested for complaints is still important.

“We have all reduced the virus by following the measures well,” says Timen. “We have to get back to that behavior.” That does not seem to happen. “People now have a sense of freedom and want to catch up on parties,” she says. “But our concern is that the measures are no longer being observed.”

Clusters

Across the country, there are currently 90 places where more than two infections can be linked, so-called contamination clusters. On average, this concerns almost five infections that are related to each other.
