Distinguishing Symptoms of Covid-19 Infection and Allergy in Children Page all

KOMPAS.com – Children are inseparable from the threat of Covid-19 infection. However, parents should not panic first if the child shows symptoms similar to Covid-19, such as coughs and colds that may be allergic symptoms.

Child Allergy and Immunology Consultant, Prof. DR. Budi Setiabudiawan, SpA (K), M. Kes said, allergic symptoms will appear in three organs, one of which is a respiratory organ.

Therefore, there can be similarities between symptoms of infection and allergies.

“In pandemics many parents ask if there are symptoms in the airways, many are worried about allergies or Corona virus infections.”

As stated by Prof. Budi in the webinar “Advanced Generation Allergy Response Week: Allergy Response in the Pandemic Period for Advanced Generations” with SGM Advanced Advance + Soya, Monday (6/29/2020).

To distinguish respiratory symptoms for allergies or infections, try answering at least the following three questions.

1. Is there a fever during cough / cold?

2. Does it often occur at night or appear throughout the day?

3. Does phlegm come out? If so, does the phlegm thicken like snot and what color is it like?

Prof. Budi explained, if the child has an infection, including Covid-19 infection, then the symptoms of cough / cold are usually accompanied by fever, while allergies are usually not accompanied by fever.

If the cause is an infection, coughing or colds occur throughout the day, while the main allergy appears at night.

The thick and colored phlegm or snot is also a symptom of infection, whereas snot or phlegm in children who suffer from allergies tend to be runny and clear.

If the child has both an infection and an allergy, immediately consult a doctor to get a diagnosis of curat and the child can get proper treatment.

Children who have cow’s milk allergy, for example, the doctor will treat the symptoms that appear and inform children to avoid consuming cow’s milk protein and its preparations.

Then, the child will be directed to consume alternative nutritional sources so that growth and development remain optimal.

“Do not diagnose yourself or treat or take action on your own, because diagnosing, treating or acting alone without consulting a doctor can cause late diagnosis and treatment is not as soon as possible and optimal,” he said.
