Disneyland Forward Gets Green Light from Anaheim City Council for $1.9 Billion Expansion Plan

Anaheim City Council Approves Disneyland Forward Expansion Plan

Disney Receives Unanimous Approval for $1.9 Billion Expansion

Disney’s ambitious plan to expand its original theme park, Disneyland, has taken a significant step forward. The Anaheim City Council has granted unanimous approval for the $1.9 billion Disneyland Forward expansion initiative that will unfold over the next few decades, according to a report by Deadline. The plan received overwhelming support during an eight-hour public hearing that began on Tuesday night and concluded with a 7-0 vote. The proposal is now set for a final city council vote on May 7.

Disneyland Forward Unleashes New Possibilities

Disney CEO Bob Iger has enthusiastically confirmed that the upcoming expansion will feature an array of incredible additions and experiences for park visitors. One of the highlights will be the new Avatar area, inspired by James Cameron’s “World of Pandora” and part of the Disneyland Resort. Iger, during a recent presentation at Disney Imagineering, emphasized that Disney is leveraging its vast resources and intellectual properties to create unforgettable experiences that will generate substantial value for its shareholders.

Transforming Anaheim with New Worlds

The Disneyland Forward expansion plan sets a new path for Walt Disney’s original vision at Disneyland, effectively overcoming the longstanding challenges of limited space. Brands like Frozen, Tron, Zootopia, and Tangled could also become integral parts of Disney’s future plans for the park. As Disney gains more flexibility, exciting new landscapes and adventures, like those at Tokyo DisneySea and Shanghai Disneyland, could inspire innovative experiences in Anaheim. The ongoing expansion will effectively disrupt previous barriers to growth that had revolved around third-party acquisitions of surrounding land.

A Landmark Deal for Disneyland

To secure greater zoning flexibility in areas surrounding the park that already include major infrastructure, Disneyland will reportedly pay $40 million to acquire three essential roadways—Magic Way, Hotel Way, and a portion of Clementine Street. The acquisition unlocks new possibilities, facilitating the creation of future developments with greater ease.

Unions Plead for Fair Compensation

Simultaneously, the Disneyland cast member-led group “Magic United” and representatives from the Actor’s Equity Association have filed a petition for union recognition with the National Labor Relations Board. The petition, signed by an overwhelming 17,000 employees, aims to improve pay and working conditions for cast members who play a significant role in bringing the magic to Disney’s guests. The union recognition complements Disney’s commitment to job creation—Disneyland Forward is projected to generate 8,960 new jobs during the construction phase and 4,584 during operations.

Anaheim Anticipates Economic Boost

Disneyland Forward holds tremendous promise for the city of Anaheim. With the construction jobs solely earmarked for Anaheim residents and veterans, Disneyland Resort president Ken Potrock emphasized the commitment to hiring from the local workforce. Deadline estimates that the development agreement will see Disney investing $2.5 billion in the expansion project by its anticipated completion in 2064.
