Disney’s head of theme parks Josh D’Amaro calls the decision “heartbreaking,” but also says it is “the only option we’ve seen the impact of the coronavirus on our business.” Disney’s two theme parks in California have been closed for months. In Florida, the parks were already allowed to open. Parks have also reopened in other places in the world, such as China, Hong Kong, Japan and France. However, there were often restrictions in terms of the number of visitors.
In the United States, a company can send its employees home without firing them. Then only part of the social security contributions has to be paid. The employees who have been sent to such a so-called ‘furlough’ can then temporarily do other work. The employees who have now been fired will receive 90 days of salary.
Disney’s American amusement parks employed more than 100,000 people before the corona outbreak.
