Discussion in US after reviewers call waking Snow White “problematic” and “old-fashioned” | Abroad

In the US, a heated discussion has arisen after an opinion piece by two reviewers from SFgate, an issue of the San Francisco Chronicle, about a new Disney attraction. They find the scene in which the prince kisses Snow White awake “problematic”, because she was in a coma and could therefore not give her permission.

In the review, reviewers are outraged by the ending of the attraction ‘Snow White’s Enchanted Wish’, where the prince wakes up Snow White by kissing her. They call the end scene old-fashioned and think it gives a wrong image to children.

For those who need a memory refresh, Snow White falls into a coma after biting the evil queen’s poisoned apple. Then the prince tries to wake her up by kissing her. Not exactly romantic, say the reviewers. “Kissing each other without both parties indicating their willingness to do so has nothing to do with the ‘true love’ that wakes up Snow White,” it says.

“Don’t we all agree that consent is problematic in certain Disney movies? Teaching children that kissing without the consent of both parties is not okay? ”The reviewers continue. “It’s hard to understand why Disney chooses a scene in 2021 with such old-fashioned ideas about what a man should do with a woman.”

Other criticisms

Three years ago, Kaue Mua, a professor at the University in Japan, expressed all her displeasure with the kissing scene. She spoke of great shame and the promotion of sexual violence.

Disneyland has often been under fire for the attractions in the park. The ‘Jungle Cruise’ attraction was harshly criticized for negative images of black people. The attraction ‘Splash Mountain’ was also criticized for too many racist scenes. Previously, Disney already adapted the ‘Snow White’ attraction, because children found the wicked witch too “scary”.

Disney has not yet commented on the article, which is currently being shared worldwide. Not everyone agrees with the reviewers.
