Technologue.id, Jakarta – Astronomers discovered exoplanets that create spiral arms around stars. This structure is commonly seen in young galaxies and stars and it turns out that these objects can also be born from newly formed exoplanets.

Quoted from Digitaltrends, astronomers used the Large Binoculars Telescope in Arizona to investigate a giant exoplanet or exoplanet named MWC 758c that appears to form spiral arms around its host star.

Located 500 light years away, this star is only a few million years old, making it a “baby” in cosmic terms.

“Our study puts forward strong evidence that these spiral arms were caused by giant planets,” said lead researcher Kevin Wagner of the University of Arizona in a statement.

He continued, “With the new James Webb Space Telescope, we will be able to further test and support this idea by searching for more planets like MWC 758c.”

The star observed by the researchers still has a disk of protoplanetary dust and gas around it, making it comparable to the early stages of our solar system.

“I think of this system as an analogy for how our solar system will emerge less than 1% of its lifetime,” said Wagner.

He explained, “Jupiter, being a giant planet, likely also interacted with and gravitationally carved our own disk billions of years ago, eventually leading to the formation of Earth.”

Spiral arms are formed in the protoplanetary disk by the gravity of the major planets. Astronomers had predicted this phenomenon but had not seen it until now. By studying it researchers can find out about the formation of planetary systems.
