Scientists went to the wonderful sea funnel located 70 kilometers from Belize and called the Great Blue Hole. During the expedition, the researchers discovered something exciting and very disturbing.

This unique ocean funnel, 124 meters deep, is known to have formed during a series of glaciations between 153,000 and 15,000 years ago, when sea levels were much lower. These mysterious depths eventually became a cult diving site, their popularity facilitated by the dives of French ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau in the early 1970s.

Alas, even these once-pure waters have not been immune to human influence and pollution, as evidenced by the unexpected finds discovered during the expedition, Express writes. During the study, two submarines were sent into the depths to create a 3D map of the Big Blue Hole using sonar scans. However, during the dive, the scientists also found marine debris and the bodies of two dead divers.

It is known that the expedition was organized by Aquatica Submarines with the financial support of partners and took place from November 27 to December 13, 2018. During the expedition, scientists made two dozen dives, taking with them various passengers. The purpose of the expedition was to explore the eerie hole, and part of the mission was even broadcast live on the Discovery Channel.

According to the president of Aquatica Submarines, Harvey Fleming, the success of the expedition was incredible, as a result of which scientists were able to show the whole world the magic of the Big Blue Hole. In addition, the researchers note that the findings are another reminder that humanity must work hard to save our oceans, Glasnews.bg specifies.

Note that the Big Blue Hole is shrouded in some mystery – it was previously thought that “ancient monsters” even lived here. But the real monsters facing the ocean turned out to be humans. The fact is that during the diving at the bottom of the funnel, scientists found plastic bottles and other waste.

The authors of the expedition hope that the garbage they found will be another reminder that humanity must stop using plastic, since it has already become a huge threat to the ocean – a lot of plastic garbage is stored at the bottom of the Earth’s oceans and marine animals are constantly dying from microplastics.

Another curious feature of the Big Blue Hole that researchers found was a layer of hydrogen sulfide. This chemical is believed to have accumulated in the funnel for centuries.

It is extremely toxic because it inhibits cellular respiration, similar to cyanide. It goes without saying that under this layer the scientists did not see anything alive, although they noticed the bodies of two divers, as well as crabs, shells and other creatures that rolled into this hole and suffocated.
