“Discover the World of Magic: Immortals of Aveum, the New Magic Shooter Game”

Jak has never heard of Expelliarmus lessons, Quidditch and Hogwarts. And it hasn’t been quite as tranquil in his home country as it was in the magic school: Jak grew up penniless on the streets of Seren, but as the “recipient” after a particularly traumatic experience, he benefited from an unusual twist of fate: In fact, he is one of the few who unexpectedly acquires magical abilities later in life. But of course these are not just a blessing, but a curse at the same time: it is almost inevitably drawn into the endless and brutal war of the individual powers trying to gain control of magic.

In case it was still a bit unclear in the first lines: Of course, good Jak has precious little to do with the “Hogwarts” universe, apart from the fact that he is the protagonist of the brand new magic shooter “Immortals of Aveum“ and can of course stage his magical skills very clearly. The game, from Ascendant Studios, a AAA independent development team led by Dead Space and Call of Duty creative director Bret Robbins, was first revealed late last year at the 2022 Game Awards. Almost four months later, we were allowed to take a look at the gameplay and the world of Aveum for the first time – and were quite impressed with what we got to see.

In fact, “Immortals of Aveum” differs from many other representatives that include magical abilities in that it is actually a single-player magic shooter that is purely designed for an extended single-player campaign and fast-paced magic combat from the first-person perspective . You slip into the role of Jak, who has a special gift as the “recipient”: As one of the few magicians in his guild, he can use all three colors of magic (red, blue and green) that prevail in Aveum. This is also why Jak is referred to as the Triarch and is recruited by the leader of the “Immortals” General Kirkin to perhaps be the decisive factor for the future of Aveum in the fight between Lucium and Rasharn.

As Creative Director Bret Robbins emphasized at the preview event, “Immortals of Aveum” is a pure singplayer experience: The campaign should be quite extensive with almost 25 hours of playtime and be characterized by a gripping story and engaging characters. There will be no multiplayer at least at the release. After his experiences at CoD & Co., it was always a special concern for Robbins to create a fast-paced and thrilling magic shooter – and at least that’s the impression “Immortals of Aveum” definitely gives.

Because the first game scenes that we get to see not only show us the game world of Aveum, which is divided into differently colored “laylines”, but above all a young magician on his first mission: Because both for your offensive spells as well as for your defense uses her different colored magic spells in the different colors. While you start out with just a few spells, you have more than 25 spells and 80 talents to unlock and improve as the campaign progresses.

While your blue spells tend to work best at range, red spells, like a shotgun, tend to be more melee – and deal great damage. Green spells cause automatic projectiles, which can also attack several opponents, for example. You also have special spells, defensive spells and certain abilities such as a kind of magical whip that you can use to pull opponents towards you.

You can also customize your spells to suit your playstyle as the campaign progresses, with different upgrades. While the game, according to the first gameplay impressions, is much more linear than we initially thought and is divided into individual chapters, the battles then surprised us positively: In a later gameplay impression, Jak unpacked almost his entire arsenal of spells and transformed the screen into an overkill of projectiles that was not only temporarily reminiscent of the Doom reboot in terms of dynamics and speed. The Doom DNA can also be felt elsewhere: The combat sections are divided into smaller hub areas in which you have to move through and fight.

At first glance, that actually looked very exciting. The team has also spared no expense with the cutscenes and animations and is actually presenting a magic shooter in AAA guise, which certainly has what it takes to become a surprise hit in the summer game lineup – even if we still have the quality of the story and the narration of course can’t say much.

Immortals of Aveum is slated for release on July 20, 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In any case, we are curious to see whether the fast and spectacular fights play as well as they already look. You can see the reveal trailer here:
