Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is one of those flagships that have been fighting for the attention of potential customers since the beginning of 2023. One of the main features that the manufacturer pays attention to in this model is the camera and its capabilities – especially after dark. Just a few words today nightographybut also about a promotion that – as Samsung boasts – has not yet been.

Universal camera. Great during the day, nice at night

I have never hidden that my favorite smartphone last year was the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra for the sake of the universality of the camera – beautiful bokeh, sensational portrait mode, great zoom (usable up to 30x). In its successor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung has improved what was worth improving – night photos and video, the quality of which shows huge progress.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is equipped with a rich set of cameras: the main 200 Mpix (with f / 1.7 brightness), 12 Mpix ultra-wide angle, a telephoto lens with a 10x optical zoom and a second telephoto lens with a 3x optical zoom. The whole is complemented by a 12 Mpix selfie camera.

In the latest flagship, Samsung primarily boasts of improving artificial intelligence algorithms that are responsible for the detail of photos and color reproduction. In addition, mapping and depth analysis are important, thanks to which focusing is faster and portraits are more clearly outlined.

You don’t have to look far for the effects. A short walk around Warsaw is enough to check the capabilities of the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera at night, both in automatic and night mode. I like the photos we get using this equipment – and wet pavements helped to obtain interesting effects.

Equally important is how the smartphone camera copes with artificial lighting. And it works very well – both in automatic and portrait mode. Anyway, see how it is also with the zoom in the garage – this is my favorite test place for close-ups 🙂

astrophotography? No problem

One of my favorite places on earth is Tenerife. The island is incredibly diverse, so everyone will find something for themselves. It is similar with photography – during the day cliffs, beautiful beaches and landscapes are recommended, at night – a cloudless sky, undisturbed by city lights, especially in the area directly below the Teide volcano (as a curiosity, I will add that there is an astronomical observatory in that area).

I mention this for a reason. In the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra we are dealing with the astrophotography mode. To use it, go to Expert RAW, which from this generation of Galaxy S smartphones is sewn into the camera modes (in the previous it appeared as an additional, external application).

After opening Expert RAW, a constellation icon appears in the upper right part of the screen (available in 12 Mpix). Just click it to access a dedicated mode with the ability to record images for 4, 7 or 10 minutes. As Samsung points out, AI segmentation then enhances clarity to bring out the purity of the moon and stars. Later, from the editing level, we can speed up the recordings to give them more dynamics. It looks really good. I regret that there are no conditions for such projects now…

When astrophotography becomes unattainable – Galaxy Playground

Not everyone wants or has the conditions to photograph the starry sky. However, each of us could go to the Galaxy Playground – a place prepared by Samsung, where you could also reach the stars, although more mundane. It’s a pity that this space is no longer available…

I had the opportunity to go to Galaxy Playground and I have to admit that it is one of the coolest places in Warsaw that was worth visiting if you wanted to take unobvious photos for your Social Media profiles or just for your home archive. A lot of installations were prepared, which everyone could see a little differently – it allowed to indulge in imagination and creativity.
