An image of Lagoa dos Barros, also known as Lagoa Azul and Bacupari, in the North Coastrecorded directly from space, was published in site da Nasa last Thursday (13). The record was made by former astronaut Jack Fischer six years ago, on July 9, 2017.

According to Nasa, the photograph was taken when Fischer was part of the Expedition 52 crew, aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The image also captured the barchan dunes, which are shaped like the moon in the first quarter phase.

The agency’s publication explains that the tips of these dunes show the direction of the wind, indicating the predominant direction of air currents. These fragile formations act as barriers, preventing wind and waves from advancing, mitigating the effect of storms and minimizing coastal erosion.
