The most famous feature of Matala Beach is the many Roman and Christian tombs carved into the limestone rock thousands of years ago. Many caves consist of rooms, stairs, beds, windows and were once used for living. Around the 60s – 70s, hippies found their paradise in these caves.

This Cretan beach has a tropical feel as it is surrounded by beautiful tall palm trees and a small island in the middle of the bay. Interestingly, the Vai palm forest is the largest palm forest in Europe. Today it is considered one of the most beautiful parts of Crete and the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag by the European Union.
