Disaster Strikes Manchester United in Draw Against Sevilla: Maguire-Malacia Own Goal

Manchester

Disaster appeared at the back line of Manchester United when held by Sevilla. Tyler Malacia-Harry Maguire committed suicide, and Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were injured.

MU hosted Sevilla at Old Trafford, in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, Friday (14/4/2023) early morning WIB. The hosts were held to a 2-2 draw.

Having led two goals through the actions of Marcel Sabitzer, disaster approached MU in the second half. His back line was hit by repeated problems throughout the first 45 minutes.

Starting with the injury to Raphael Varane, MU then played Harry Maguire. After that, problems continued to complicate the rearguard of Erik ten Hag’s team.

Starting with Tyrell Malacia’s suicide in the 84th minute, MU’s advantage began to thin to 2-1 over Sevilla. Then Mu’s efforts to defend his victory were even more difficult after Lisandro Martinez was injured two minutes later.

The Argentinian defender could not continue the match, and unfortunately MU could not enter a substitute because he had made five substitutions. As a result, MU continued the rest of the game with ten people.

This situation ultimately became the trigger for MU’s unlucky fate at Old Trafford. Because, Sevilla was finally able to equalize the score, taking advantage of the mistakes of the opponent’s back row.

This time, it was Harry Maguire who scored an own goal in injury time. The world’s most expensive defender deflected Youssef En-Nesyri’s header into his own goal.

After the match, Maguire assessed that his team had defended well. He doubted the unfortunate fate of MU who had to lose Lisandro, who was considered the main cause of his team’s failure to maintain victory.

“We had control throughout the match until we conceded the first goal, then it was a shame to concede the second and lose Lisandro to injury. We used all the substitutions and had to play with 10 men then and that’s the setback,” Maguire told UEFA’s official website.

“I feel we defended pretty well, showed good spirit and good character and we almost finished the game. Then something very unfortunate happened, and we ended up drawing 2-2, but there is still a chance next week,” Maguire said. .

The second leg in turn was held at the Seville headquarters, Friday (21/4/2023) in the morning WIB. MU only needs to win 1-0 to ensure its passage into the semifinals of the Europa League.
