Disaster Authorities’ Lax Response: Incorrect Earthquake Reporting Raises Public Anxiety

▲Incorrect disaster text photo: Yonhap News It is pointed out that in relation to the earthquake that occurred in Jangsu-gun, Jeonbuk on the 29th, the disaster authorities’ oboe of the earthquake scale and the location of the earthquake overlapped, raising public anxiety.

The Korea Meteorological Administration sent an emergency disaster text message saying that an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred 18km north of Jangsu-gun at around 7:07 pm on the 29th.

The disaster text message requesting citizens’ attention was sent at 7:08 pm, just one minute after the earthquake.

The Korea Meteorological Administration revised the magnitude of the earthquake to 3.5 at 7:13 pm, five minutes later.

However, the Korea Meteorological Administration did not immediately notify the public of this correction.

The Jeonju Meteorological Office explained, “Earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 or less were not the matter of sending emergency disaster text messages to the entire nation, so they were delivered only to related organizations.”

The response of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters was even more absurd.

At 8:26 p.m., the script sent a text message saying, “Please respond calmly to an earthquake (magnitude 3.5) in Jangsu-gun, Jeollanam-do.”

The heavy script belatedly found out that ‘Jangsu-gun, Jeonbuk’ was incorrectly written as ‘Jangsu-gun, Jeonnam’, and sent a correction text 20 minutes later.

The local name was misspelled in the safety information letter sent 1 hour and 19 minutes after the earthquake occurred, and it took 20 minutes to correct it.

Citizens are criticizing the disaster authorities for their lax response, from the Itaewon stampede and the flooding of the Osong underground road to the earthquake misreporting and coming.
