Disappointment after questioning experts in Nicky Verstappen case | Inland

Pathologist-anatomist Gert van Ingen performed the autopsy on Nicky’s body in 1998. During his interrogation, he mainly relied on his notes from 23 years ago. At the time, he determined that there were no point bleeding that could indicate suffocation as the cause of death. But that does not exclude the possibility that the boy did indeed die from “respiration obstruction,” he says. That does not always leave traces – such as point bleeding.

Like Van Ingen, forensic doctors Wouter Karst and Rob Bilo did not dare to say with certainty that Nicky Verstappen was sexually abused. Pathologist Van Ingen saw minor damage that may indicate this. “But that’s an interpretation of what I saw.” He could not give more certainty.

Mediocre photos

Karst and Bilo could only judge on the basis of mediocre photos, nor did they provide the clarity that the Public Prosecution Service and the court are looking for.

The substantive handling of the case by the Den Bosch Court of Appeal will start on November 10. There are 5 days allotted on November 10, 15, 17, 19 and 24. According to lawyer Wendy van Egmond, it is not yet certain whether Nicky Verstappen’s parents and sister will use their right to speak. The family was not present at the hearing for the first time on Friday in connection with the death of Berthie Verstappen’s father.

Jos B. was previously sentenced by the court in Maastricht to 12.5 years in prison and TBS with compulsory treatment for culpable homicide and sexual abuse of Nicky Verstappen.
