It is a first in France !

On the Dijon/Saint-Amour lineat the level of the municipality of Thorey-en-Plaine (Côte-d’Or), SNCF inaugurated this Thursday, February 9, a sound scarer device.

Objective : frighten the animals at each train passing with the sounds of barking, gunshots, cries of animals… for avoid collisions between trains and big game as much as possible.

150 incidents in 2022

In 2022, collisions with wildlife accounted for 150 incidents and 400 hours of delay.

The traffic regularity is a priority objective for the quality of service, which is why SNCF Network wishes to reduce clashes with wildlife by implementing appropriate solutions.

For rolling stock, the consequences are also important.

For illustration, TER Bourgogne-Franche-Comté activity considers that the damage generated in particular by wildlife, but also by farm animals and incidents related to vegetation cost around 1.2 million euros per year for repairs and immobilisation of trains.

An innovative device

In practice, 1.5 kilometers upstream and downstream of the area to be secured, sensors detect passing trains as well as their direction of movement.

The radio relays retransmit the detection of the sensors to the beacons which are spaced 300 meters along of the area to be protected.

The beacons emit a sound, adapted to the season, so that wildlife does not approach the tracks when the train passes, thus animals associate noise with the notion of danger.

The Thorey-en-Plaine site, a 3.6 kilometer long sector, was identified after a diagnosis established by the regional federation of hunters.

The experiment will take place until the end of 2023 in three stages.
