Epidemiologist from Griffith University, Dicky Budiman stated that the testing treatment for corpses was different Covid-19 in Indonesia and the United States (US).
In New York, United States, the local government tests the bodies of every deceased citizen who previously had symptoms of Covid-19. This is done to achieve data accuracy of people who died from being infected with the corona virus in that country.
Not only that, a number of developing countries even argued that they did not test corpses that had Covid-19 symptoms before dying due to budget constraints. Many countries choose to take advantage of living testing facilities.
“It doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter. So what is being done in America is in relation to what he is economically capable of and that is to strengthen his data,” he said.
In addition, Dicky said testing all bodies that had Covid-19 symptoms before dying would have an impact on increasing the death rate. Therefore, a number of countries chose not to do this so that the number of cases of death did not increase.
“In developed countries, generally the study is not only in living humans, but there are autopsy and all kinds,” said Dicky.
Furthermore, he said testing bodies with Covid-19 symptoms was an appeal from the World Health Organization (WHO).
“So this is actually the WHO’s newest reporting system. (The testing was carried out) not only the corpses that had already tested positive, but also those that had previously shown clinical signs towards Covid-19,” said Dicky to CNNIndonesia.com, Wednesday (9/9 ).
Indonesia strengthens the test for healthy people
On the other hand, Dicky said that Indonesia does not need to imitate New York’s steps to test bodies that previously had Covid-19 symptoms. He advised Indonesia to first strengthen the testing, which is currently still far from WHO’s recommendation, which is 1 test per 1,000 people per week.
“Why should it be prioritized? Because it is to prevent death. Massive, aggressive, and active tests are useful for detecting people who have comorbidities (comorbidities),” he said.
Dicky added that people who have comorbidities will get worse if they are infected with Covid-19. From that situation, he said that the death rate in Indonesia would automatically increase.
More than that, Dicky said the death rate is a valid number. The death rate, he continued, represents the condition of a region.
“Therefore, the death rate must be as valid as possible. If it is zero we can be sure we are in front of the virus. If there are still one or two we are just as fast. If the figure is like Indonesia, we are several months behind,” he said.
Launch Business Insider, the New York government issued a regulation requiring Covid-19 testing of the bodies of people who died in hospitals or nursing homes within 48 hours of death.
The body that must be tested for suspected respiratory disease, but for 14 days has not been tested for flu and coronavirus. The policy was created in an effort to collect more accurate data on the two diseases.
