Diet and Lifestyle Tips for Managing Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is difficult for a person to identify because it does not manifest itself through specific symptoms related only to liver diseases.

However, the main warning signs are: intense fatigue, irritability, insomnia, loss of appetite or pain in the right side of the abdomen.

Other gastrointestinal symptoms that may signal the onset of hepatic steatosis are: pain after a meal, flatulence, nausea or diarrhea.

Steatosis can be alcoholic, where the main cause is the excessive consumption of alcohol, and non-alcoholic, where the incriminated causes are: obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, consumption of certain drugs or pregnancy.

Doctors claim that, through diet and exercise, a person who has reached stage II of steatosis can fully recover to the primary stage of the disease.

For example, it has been shown to reduce the fat content of the liver as a result of physical activity. Weight loss has also been shown to have a positive effect on transaminase levels in laboratory tests, and in most patients a >10% weight loss leads to remission of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The Romanian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology draws attention to a worrying tendency of the population to associate or replace verified hepatoprotective therapy with unverified dietary supplements.

For breakfast, we recommend low-fat cheese – less than 2% fat – or an omelet made of four to five egg whites with green vegetables and one or two slices of toasted wholemeal bread.

The first snack of the day can consist of a green apple or a low-fat yogurt – less than 2% fat, according to adevarul.ro.

Lunch includes lean white or red meat – chicken breast, turkey or pork loin, beef – with green vegetables: beans, spinach, broccoli, lentils.

For the second snack of the day, also a low-fat yogurt – under 2%.

For dinner, you can eat lean fish or five-six egg whites with green vegetables. Along with diet, physical activity should not be missing.

Cranberries

Blueberries contain antioxidants called anthocyanins that are able to stop the growth of cancer cells in the liver, damage and scar tissue. It only takes 3-4 weeks of daily consumption.

Green leafy vegetables

Green vegetables help the liver through their high chlorophyll content. It neutralizes metals, chemicals and pesticides that enter the body through food and the environment. Vegetables like arugula, spinach and chicory are good for bile and detoxification. Beets are great for blood purification, and vegetables like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower have a ton of glucosinolate to help the liver produce enzymes needed to eliminate toxins.

Garlic

Garlic contains selenium as an antioxidant, and B6 is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Garlic also contains arginine, an amino acid that relaxes blood vessels. This action can reduce blood pressure in the liver. And finally, garlic helps the liver to activate enzymes that are used to eliminate toxins, writes doctoruzilei.ro.
