Didn’t you pay the car tax in August? Here are the penalties

What happens if you forget to pay the car tax by August? Here is everything you need to know about the times to be respected to be able to pay before the final deadline and the penalties provided for if you were to go even beyond it.

As regards the month of August, the payment of the annual tax due to anyone who owns a vehicle should have been made by the 31st: there are, therefore, only another 30 days from the aforementioned date (until, that is, to the 30th of September) in order to pay the expected amount and pay the debt to the tax authorities.

The measures, for those who do not make payments within the last extension of one month, therefore start from 1 October: in addition to the usual interest on arrears, in fact, sanctions which increase in proportion to the increase in the delay. If you decide to settle the balance no later than 14 days from the deadline of September 30th, the penalty is 0.1% of the total car tax. If, on the other hand, you are over 90 days late, you can go up to 3.75% of the ownership tax.

What happens, however, if we were to unfortunately postpone the payment even beyond these terms? After three years, the Revenue Agency takes care of forwarding the first payment notice to the taxpayer and, in the event that the debt is not paid, it would become subject to compulsory collection. This, among other things, can lead up to administrative detention of the means of transport and even the foreclosure of one’s current account. The subsequent risk, then, is that of seeing the cancellation of said vehicle from the archives of the public vehicle register (Pra) in the Region of residence. After this provision it will in any case be necessary to re-register the car in order to be able to circulate regularly.
