Thirty years ago, Michael Jackson unveiled his eighth album, “Dangerous”. Among the tracks, “In the Closet”, recorded in the greatest secrecy with the Monegasque princess.
It was in November 1991. The roi de la pop released their eighth solo album, titled Dangerous. One of the titles of this new opus immediately catches the attention of fans. This is the third track on the record, “In the Closet”. She begins with a few words whispered by a suave and languid female voice. “There is something that I have to confess to you / If you swear to understand me / I cannot suppress myself when you are near me / I am humble / Touch me / No longer hide our attraction / That of a woman and a man …“the voice whispered. This voice is that of the princess Stephanie of Monaco. The young woman, still carried by the success of her hit “Comme un huragan”, appeared five years earlier, was invited by the singer himself.
How this duo improbable has it formed? You have to go back to 1987. The youngest of the Grimaldi clan swirls at the top of the charts with “Comme un huragan”. At that point, the young woman wants more. She wishes to play the first parts of concerts in France from Bad World Tour by Michael Jackson. But she suffered a clear refusal from the entourage of the artist, today accused of pedophilia. A few years later, Janet Jackson’s brother needed a collaboration with a woman to put an end to the rumors ofhomosexuality concerning him. Deeming a Madonna too vulgar in his eyes, the King of Pop then remembers that he has a real princess among his fans (even two, with Lady Di). Stéphanie from Monaco is invited to put her voice on the song “In the Closet”. But on one condition: never talk about it.

The identity of Stéphanie of Monaco kept secret for years
At the release of the album Dangerous, the identity of the woman heard on “In the Closet” is not disclosed. On the cover of the work, the famous voice is attributed to “Mystery Girl“, or a” mystery girl. “The public and the media are seizing on the subject. Who is this girl ? Some names are advanced like Paula Abdul |, star of the moment and friend of the Jackson family. We also hear the name of Madonna, appeared a few months earlier alongside the singer during the Oscars ceremony. Finally, we suspect Janet Jackson, the artist’s little sister, despite her decision to no longer be associated with him. Corn the king of pop does not let go, amused by the dismay of the journalists and probably proud of his genius marketing stunt.
For years her identity will remain one of the best kept secrets in show business. In 1992, when the song’s clip came out, the mystery grew tenfold. In the video, the top model Naomi Campbell, who appears very close to Michael Jackson, plays back on this famous female voice. But that’s not her: once again, the King of Pop is cheating on everyone. It was in 1993, during a meeting with fans in Gstaad (Switzerland), that Michael ended up reveal identity of this “Mystery Girl”. To everyone’s surprise, it is Stéphanie from Monaco.
