Did J. Robert Oppenheimer ever apologize for creating the atomic bomb?

Jakarta

Film Oppenheimerhighlighting the actions of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who created good atom. Even though he seems sorry for creating weapons of mass destruction, has he ever apologized?

In one scene after the Japanese bombing, Oppenheimer visits President Harry S. Truman at the White House and says he felt blood on his hands, much to Truman’s offense. This conversation really happened, according to Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s American Prometheus winner’s biography, and reflects Oppenheimer’s feelings.

In a speech to Los Alamos scientists in the fall of 1945, Oppenheimer did not voice his full regret. As the Nuclear Museum notes, he felt someone would eventually build the atomic bomb and like in the film, he felt it was important for the United States to excel, especially when the Nazis were also trying to develop it.

But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t regret it. That “blood on my hands” moment alone is enough to illustrate how heavy the weight of that bomb would have been on Oppenheimer for the rest of his life. Then, he spent a lot of time trying to prevent a nuclear war.

He views the bomb itself as evil and believes that the next ‘super’ Hydrogen bomb will be nothing more than a genocidal machine. At one point, he even visited Japan, stopping in the country in 1960 with his wife. There he was asked if setting foot in the country changed his feelings about his role in the bombings.

“I don’t think coming to Japan changes the way I feel about my sadness about my role in this entire chapter of history. Nor does it completely make me regret my responsibility for technical success. It’s not that I don’t feel bad. It’s because I don’t feel worse tonight than last night night,” he said.

So Oppenheimer did feel bad for his role in the bombings, but did he ever apologize outright? Although he may have said something in private that was never recorded, as far as historical records can tell, he never offered a formal or informal apology for the bomb or its use in Japan.

He remained concerned about the nature of the bomb as an existential threat to humanity for the rest of his life, but an immediate apology never came.

“Like everything with Oppenheimer, you can look at things in very contradictory ways,” physicist Brian Cox said in an interview with Esquire.

“Although an eloquent and careful speaker, he never apologized for the bombing of Japan, nor did he express shame about his role. However, all of his actions and policies after 1945 reflect a very guilty person, very aware of the consequences of his actions,” he concluded .
