“That money is desperately needed”, assures DON founder Maarten de Gruyter, who is a diabetes patient himself, as well as other board members. Prof. dr. Eelco de Koning, professor of diabetology in Leiden, has already achieved surprising results in the past. Now that he has everything in the scaffolding to get on with it, the money flow is being cut off because the corona virus still has too much chance to spread.

“The room in the RDM Submarine Wharf in Rotterdam was already fully furnished”, Floor Dijkgraaf sighs. She is a board member of the 15-year-old DON foundation, whose employees today are doing everything they can to still get enough funds. “The flowers now have to go to old people’s homes and the food for hundreds of people goes to homeless shelters.”
In the meantime, the foundation is not deterred. “Corona will not hinder us in what we have started for tonight”, Dijkgraaf assures. “Diabetes patients should not lose hope because of the pandemic. And that is not necessary”, she encourages the 100,000 Dutch diabetics with type 1, including 10,000 children.
Due to the corona measures, the seats remain empty in the Submarine Wharf in Rotterdam.

,,For those who would be in the hall, an online auction will follow at 7 p.m. Almost all buyers of the dinner tables do not need their money back. “A good start”, says Floor. “Because the auction proceeds will probably yield less than expected, we also hope for crowdfunding.
