Serie A legend Paolo Di Canio believes Inter Milan and Juventus will be in the Scudetto race until the end, but warns ‘AC Milan could also get back into the race.
The Nerazzurri are at the top of the table with two points ahead of the Old Lady ahead of this weekend’s matches.
Milan managed to reduce the gap on the leading duo, with 29 points, six adrift of their city rivals.
“Inter and Juventus will fight to the end for the Scudetto, given the quality and strength in depth they have,” Di Canio told Radio 24.
“The Nerazzurri are the team that should win the title, although Juve will continue to cause them problems, even if the gap at the top widens.”
While many expect it to be a two-horse race, there is a reason why Di Canio will not rule Stefano Pioli’s men out of the trophy race.
“We are not even halfway through the season and Milan could also get back into contention. However, they can only be considered an option if they are eliminated from all European competitions, as this team is not large enough to handle multiple tournaments.
It’s a completely plausible scenario, as they currently sit third with Newcastle United in their Champions League group.
If they win at St. James’ Park and Paris Saint-Germain also lose to Borussia Dortmund, then Milan will be able to continue in this tournament.
They also risk ending up in the Europa League play-offs or being eliminated from Europe altogether in fourth place.
Napoli are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, but despite the arrival of new coach Walter Mazzarri, Di Canio has little hope of winning the Scudetto again.
“I think they are now out of the race and can only fight for a top four place.”
