DFB Cup draw: RB Leipzig has to go to Nuremberg

The first main round of the DFB Cup was drawn on Sunday. This showed that Bundesliga club RB Leipzig meet 1. FC Nürnberg away from home.

Cologne / Leipzig – The first main round of the DFB Cup was drawn on Sunday. This revealed that Bundesliga club RB Leipzig away from 1. FC Nürnberg. In the last second in the relegation, the “club” had secured their place in the 2nd Bundesliga.

There was already a novelty in the draw in the Cologne ARD-Sportschau-Studio: just 42 of the 64 participants were certain. More than 90 lower-class teams still had the chance of a big opponent.

The reason is once again the corona pandemic, which had also led to the interruption of all state cups. In some cases, the state associations even have to play quarter-finals, for example in Saarland and the Lower Rhine.

RB Leipzig – that much was certain before the draw – could not, as always, play against a first division team or the top 14 second division teams from last season. So, among other things, an away game at the second division relegated Dynamo Dresden was possible.

The Deputy DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich (50) acted as the ticket fairy, DFB President Fritz Keller (63) opened the balls she drew.

The first match was 1. FC Nürnberg against RB Leipzig! Defending champion FC Bayern plays for the Mittelrhein Cup winners (possibly Aachen), Dortmund has to go to Duisburg, Dynamo receives HSV.

The well-known “Amateurs Final Day” will take place on August 22nd, on which the finals of (almost) all regional associations will be played at the same time from 2.30pm (ARD conference live).

The first DFB Cup main round will be played from September 11th to 14th (one week before the start of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd league). The exact dates will probably only be published after the “final day of the amateurs”.

RB sports director Markus Krösche (39) spoke up shortly after the draw.

“Nürnberg certainly doesn’t sound like a first-round opponent. It will be a difficult game at the beginning, but our clear goal is still to go through one round in Nürnberg.”
