Devil’s Canyon Brewer Recycles Wastewater to Create Epic OneWater Brew: A Sustainable Solution in Drought-Stricken California

Wastewater in your beer? This is what we find in Devil’s Canyon, launched by two companies in San Francisco, California, as revealed franceinfo.

A start-up (Epic Cleantec) and a Californian brewery (Devil’s Canyon) have joined forces to create this beer, made from wastewater collected, treated and then recycled. Concretely, the water coming out of the showers, sinks and washing machines of a 40-storey building is recovered. Then they are treated through an “ultra-filtration” process, using microscopic membranes and then ultraviolet rays. According to an independent laboratory, the water largely meets the quality standards set in the United States.

A beer banned from sale

Once treated by the start-up, thousands of liters of water are then sent to the brewer, who therefore creates the Epic OneWater Brew, a Kölsch-type beer with a fruity taste. According to franceinfo, it would even be rather good. Last year, more than 7,500 liters of recycled water produced 7,000 bottles of this beer… but none were sold: it’s banned in California.

Beyond the marketing and surprising aspect, it is therefore above all a question for the start-up Epic Cleantec to highlight its recycling process. At a time when access to drinking water is becoming more complicated and when many regions of the world are affected by drought (including California), the recycling of wastewater is becoming a major issue.
