The jobs at Deutsche Bahn are very diverse. In total, the transport giant offers around 50 apprenticeships. You could find out more about some of them on Friday at the train station in Gemünden.

33 students from the ninth grade of the local middle school as well as from Schweinfurt and Bad Kissingen took advantage of the offer. Adults who were interested in retraining also came.

At the “Technology & Traffic@DB of DB Netz AG” practical day, the group was able to look behind the scenes for four hours and find out what role the employees have. The individual professions were presented and illustrated by long-term employees.

The insights provided shed light on careers in the areas of transport and technology as well as everyday life at the Gemünden railway location. In the large signal box, visitors could watch how the trains are controlled.

Workshop soon in Würzburg

The areas of electronics, control and safety technology, overhead lines, roadways and superstructure also presented themselves in a practical manner and tried to arouse visitors’ interest in the activities. Some of these visitors were also quite interested.

According to Kirsten Vorndran, organizer for recruiting young talent, the electronics training workshop will move from Nuremberg back to Würzburg for the next training year, as will vocational school attendance.

The railway has a high investment backlog to clear up and major investments are pending, explained Ralf Schelbert from DB Netz AG. The group wants to hire over 100,000 new employees in the next few years alone. The bottom line is that more trains, more routes and more employees should make climate-friendly rail transport more punctual, more modern and therefore significantly more competitive. Skilled workers are urgently needed for this.

“The jobs are crisis-proof, future-oriented and the employees are deployed close to home after their training,” says Schelbert. He, like Holger Miksch from the works council, hopes that the advertising campaign on Friday will awaken the interest of one or two visitors in a career in the railways.
