Deputy General Chair of PSSI Zainuddin Amali defend Shin Tae Yong after the Indonesian National Team lost 1-3 to Japan in the 2023 Asian Cup (2024).

The Indonesian national team has only won once in three Asian Cup matches. Apart from losing to Japan, the Garuda squad also lost to Iraq with a score of 1-3 on January 15.

Indonesia achieved the only victory against Vietnam. In Amali’s view, this victory deserves to be appreciated, because Indonesia has not won against Vietnam for a long time.

“Overall I see that our national team’s performance is getting better. Moreover, yesterday they were able to beat Vietnam. I think that’s new hope,” said Amali at the GBK Arena, Wednesday (24/1).

Regarding STY’s target of bringing Indonesia through to the round of 16, according to Amali, it cannot be judged yet. The reason is that Indonesia still has a chance, even though they are waiting for the results of other group matches.

Indonesia’s fate will only be known on Thursday (25/1). The certainty of Indonesia’s qualification will be determined by the results of the matches Oman versus Kyrgyzstan or Jordan versus Bahrain.

“It’s true that the coach’s target is to qualify for the top 16, so we’ll follow it. So, you know, we at PSSI, of course whatever target the coach will convey, we will study it,” said Amali.

“We have to be realistic. We can’t say we want to be champions or anything. We study, we see that the top 16 promised by STY is realistic. This is still a journey [ada peluang],” he said.

After the 2023 Asian Cup is finished, once the Indonesian national team returns from Qatar, an evaluation will be carried out. However, this evaluation may not affect Shin’s contract which ends in June 2024.
